The Application phase of the Class of 2027 Tutu Fellowship Programme is under way
Candidates should note the hard deadline to submit their application is midnight South Africa time on 25 October.
All Nominees should have received an email informing them of the status of their nomination. That email will either be an invitation to apply, or one notifying them that their nomination has been declined for further consideration. AFLI received hundreds of nominations for the approximately 20-25 slots available. If you did not receive an email, please check your spam folder.
For applicants, please note that the application form is lengthy and rigorous, and cannot be completed quickly close to the deadline. We strongly recommend you start early and ensure it is complete before the deadline. Candidates who miss the application deadline and do not have a complete application at that time will be declined for further consideration. The process is highly competitive, so a well-presented application with thoughtful answers is required for a candidate to reach the top 50 shortlist. Even with a strong application, note that many existing Tutu Fellows had to re-apply several times before being selected.

For individuals who missed the deadline and who are still interested in the programme, AFLI opens nominations annually for the approximately 20-25 slots each year around August for several weeks. For nominators interested in submitting a candidate, please calendarise next year for this opportunity and see the Key Dates and Deadlines page. We also recommend that you whitelist this domain in your email to ensure you get all email notifications about the 2028 Fellowship. Applicants must be between 30-39 years of age, and be nominated by someone who can articulate why they would be a good Tutu Fellow.
The goal of the African Leadership Institute (AFLI) is to nurture and enhance leadership capability across Africa, with particular focus on Africa’s most promising young leaders. AFLI’s aim is to create a network of high-potential young Africans who have attended our programmes, and who are expected to rise to top leadership positions in their sphere of activity over the next 5-10 years and be actively engaged in contributing to positive change on the continent. AFLI achieves this through its flagship programme, the Archbishop Tutu Leadership Fellowship Programme, which has been offered since 2006. The programme provides leadership learning activities that enhance selected candidates' experiences, insights, tools and confidence, and provides a support network that will better enable them to become drivers of the transformation of Africa.
The Class of 2027 will be announced in January 2027.
